The Paradox of Development

Countries across the MENA region appear to have made progress in attaining the goals of social development, especially with respect to youth literacy, university enrollment, life expectancy, and female university enrollment.

Levels of economic development in MENA stand in sharp contrast to progress on the social front. MENA suffers from the highest overall and youth unemployment rates and the lowest female labor force participation rate in the world. It is also beset by the skills entrepreneurship, innovation, and gender gaps.
